Exercising ladder safety is a must when it comes to gutter cleaning. However, certain misconceptions about using this piece of equipment continue to persist, giving some homeowners a false sense of security. ABC Seamless Siding, your local source of the best rain gutter system, takes a look at some of them.

You Don’t Have to Inspect Your Ladder

Like any other equipment, a ladder can be subject to wear and tear due to frequent use. Be sure to inspect its components before using it. Check for any missing, loose or insecure steps or rungs. Look for signs of damage at the foot of the ladder as well.

Fall Protection Is Not Required

If you are planning to clean your gutters, you must first equip yourself with a harness before you climb up the ladder. Occupational safety regulations require workers to wear fall arrest protection to stop a potential fall. This applies to any work done at a height of at least 10 feet from the ground. However, the chances of injuring yourself are still high even if you work below that height.

Footwear Is Not Necessary

Even if your ladder has slip-resistant treads or bumps on the steps or rungs, they can become less effective if they become tarnished with mud, grease, snow or any similar substance. Cleaning them always helps, but be sure to wear slip-resistant footwear every time you do work at any given height.

Considering all the safety precautions you have to observe when using a ladder, you can’t help but think if gutter cleaning is worth all the trouble. Removing dead leaves and other debris helps keep your gutters functional. Alternatively, investing in a gutter protection system works just as fine, especially if you don’t have the time and energy to do the task.
