Martha Stewart Lied: 4 Spring Cleaning Myths

Spring is upon us, which means families across the country are upending their homes for deep cleaning sessions. But are you really doing cleaning right? In today’s post, Gutter Helmet®, proud provider of the best rain gutter covers on the market, debunks four of the most common spring cleaning myths. Follow our advice and enjoy a pristine home this spring!

Myth 1: Bleach is the most effective cleaning solution.

While bleach works great as a disinfectant, its cleaning powers are only subpar at best. If you need to kill bacteria, bleach is a great option, but if you’re looking to remove dirt and grime from surfaces in your home, you’re better off scrubbing the area vigorously with a sponge and a cleaning product. Not only is bleach ineffective at cleaning surfaces, its strong fumes can be bad for your health, and it can also stain some materials.

Myth 2: Citrus peels can remove foul odors from your garbage disposal.

This might work as a temporary fix, but if you dump citrus peels down your disposal, you’ll soon be facing a much larger problem than an unpleasant odor: a clogged drain. Your disposal is not intended to grind up thick citrus peel. Instead, toss your peels in the trash, and pour several teaspoons of white vinegar down your drain to get rid of the nasty smell.

Myth 3: Only use cold water when doing laundry.

While it is generally advisable to use cold water when washing delicate or brightly colored clothes, hot water works far better when it comes to killing germs and removing odors. We recommend using hot water when washing your towels, bed sheets and undergarments to make sure all the items are thoroughly cleaned.

Myth 4: Your gutters don’t really need regular cleaning.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is neglecting their gutters. In the spring, cleaning out your gutters is more crucial than ever. The heavy rain and strong storms of the season can cause leaves, pine needles and other debris to accumulate in your gutter, leading to a clog. A clogged gutter cannot drain water effectively, which can result in significant water damage to your roof and siding.
