Copper rain gutters aren’t only very attractive, but they are also extremely durable and long-lasting. With proper maintenance, they can last for up to a century. Over time, they form a coat of patina through oxidation, creating a unique, timeless weathered look that many homeowners enjoy.

Restoring Copper Rain Gutters

This task requires the use of an extension ladder. Lean the ladder against the gutters carefully to prevent denting the metal. Have someone assist you from below for your safety.

In a plastic bucket, pour four cups of flour, four cups of salt and four cups of vinegar. Mix them thoroughly to create a cleaning paste. Cover 1/2 inch of a soft-bristled brush with the cleaning paste. Rub the paste onto the copper gutter surface in a circular motion.

Using a soft cloth, wipe the area, and see if the patina has been removed. Repeat the process along the length of the gutters until they are free from patina. It may take numerous applications of the cleaning paste depending on the amount of patina. Spray the gutter surface to remove any cleaning paste residue. To protect the gutters from oxidation, you can apply a clear sealant to the cleaned surface.

Gutter Protection

Gutter guards stop leaves and other debris from entering your gutters. By installing them, you wouldn’t need to clean your gutters as often. They would prevent your gutters from rusting or early deterioration because they keep rainwater away from your home. When there’s excessive water buildup in your gutters, it can freeze during winter and block the system. With gutter guards, you don’t have to worry about this problem.

Make sure to look for gutter guard reviews when it comes to gutter protection options. At Gutter Helmet® of Piedmont, we install one of the best gutter protection systems in the industry.
