Summer storms appear without warning, but a little bit of preparedness can help prevent damage to your home. In this blog, rain gutter guard contractor Gutter Helmet® of Northern Minnesota shares tips on preventing damage from sudden storms.

Clean Your Gutters Regularly

Clean gutters efficiently route rainwater to the downspouts, helping prevent problems caused by overflowing gutters, such as damage to the home’s foundation, advanced wear and tear on the joints and gutter troughs falling off from the excess weight. A scheduled cleaning and maintenance routine conducted by a gutter professional can help prepare your gutters for sudden downpours.

Gutter Helmet makes it even easier to clean and maintain your gutters. Other gutter protection systems filter leaves, dirt and debris but leave them at the top of the gutters. This means you will still need to climb the gutters and scoop the accumulated detritus from the top. Gutter Helmet, on the other hand, is designed to shed all solid matter to the ground while routing rainwater into narrow slits. This virtually eliminates the need to clean and maintain the gutters.

Trim the Trees in the Yard

If you have trees in the yard, make sure there is a clearance of at least 10 feet from the furthest branch and the roofing surface. Tree branches can be sharp enough to poke the roofing surface and scrape the outer coating on metal roofs or the granule layer on asphalt shingles during a storm. This can expose the roofing layers underneath and leave the roof vulnerable to water damage. If you don’t have the tools needed to trim your trees, hire an arborist in your area. Another benefit of trimming your trees is preventing small animals such as squirrels from accessing your roof.

Install Storm Doors and Shutters

Storm doors and window shutters can protect your doors and windows from damage caused by sudden gusts of wind, as well as impact damage. Both can withstand a lot of wear and tear, and the cost to repair them is only a fraction of what it would cost to replace damaged windows and/or entry doors.
