Yard work can be taxing, and it can also be a time for pains and injuries, especially if one is not careful. Know how to keep yourself safe while doing work outside of your home. These are the safety tips to remember.

Pay Attention When Mowing

Before turning on your mower, see to it that the lawn doesn’t have anything that could become a projectile. It can be fallen branches, stones or stray sports gear or toys. Also, protect your legs by wearing good shoes and long pants. Watch where you are going when mowing, especially as you move on an incline. Don’t mow the grass when it’s wet to avoid slipping.

Use the Pressure Washer Properly

Don’t use a pressure washer that has a zero-degree setting or nozzle. This lets out a high-pressure water spray that can cut like a knife. Instead, select nozzles with settings of 15, 25 or 40 degrees. When using the unit, be sure that you are wearing protective gear. Wear goggles, long pants and sturdy footwear before you clean your siding. Also, never attempt to use the pressure washer while standing on a ladder. A sudden water spray has recoil and can throw you off-balance.

Stay Cautious When Going Up a Ladder

Safety is always required when going up a ladder, whether you’re cleaning high windows or removing fallen leaves from your gutters. When setting up the ladder, make sure the ground supporting it isn’t slippery, wet or soft. As you move up, make sure to hold onto the rings and not on the side rails. If you have to take some tools with you, don’t carry them by hand; use a tool belt instead. Of course, wear slip-resistant footwear. These will help you avoid falls.

When it comes to dealing with gutters, you don’t have to use a ladder every time to keep them clean. At Carolina Gutter Helmet® & More, we can install a gutter protection system that keeps debris out of your gutters and ensures proper water flow every time it rains or snows.
