Must-Do Safety Tips for Gutter Maintenance

By October 15, 2015October 18th, 2023No Comments

Caring for your roof and gutters is an important task that you should do at least twice a year. This will make sure that these systems are in good condition and perform well consistently. This will also allow you to take the necessary measures if your roof has damage.

With that said, roof and gutter maintenance involve some risk. A small slip could land you in the hospital. To help you with your roof and gutter chores, here are some safety tips to keep in mind.

Consider the Weather

Never go up a ladder when it’s raining or windy. That’s because a wet ladder or roof increases the chance of slipping and a strong gust of wind could knock you off balance.

Ladder Safety

Check every rung and make sure that your ladder is in excellent condition. Place the ladder on a solid and level surface. While on the ladder, make sure your feet are planted firmly. Keep your hips as close to the ladder as possible to help maintain your balance.

Safety Gear

Make sure you’re wearing sneakers or work boots before climbing up a ladder to avoid slipping. Safety glasses and work gloves are a must if you’re planning to do some cleaning.

Have a Partner

Don’t work on a ladder alone; it’s best to have a spotter below in case of an accident. If you do need to go at it alone, be sure to let someone know first.

If you’re not feeling up to inspecting and cleaning your gutters again this fall, you can always invest in a gutter guard to prevent debris from building up in your gutter.
