The main purpose of gutters is to direct rainwater away from your home and into a proper drainage site. When your gutters are clogged up by leaves or debris, water cannot flow freely and ends up pooling inside the troughs. This can cause the seams to rust and leak.

Resolving a leaky gutter depends on how big the problem is. Even with the best gutter guard system, serious damage requires professional attention. In the meantime, here are a few gutter “first aid” tips from Gutter Helmet® Systems of Alabama.

Preparing the Gutters

Before you attempt any repair yourself, make sure your gutters are thoroughly cleaned and that any dirt and leaves have been cleared out. Allow the gutter to dry completely. You will be using roofing cement as well as some caulking products. These will not cure properly on a wet surface. Sand away rusted areas as much as possible before applying the caulk.

Patching Up Leaks

First, follow all the steps in preparing the gutter for repairs. Once all affected surfaces are dry, apply the caulk or roof cement along the leaking seam. Give it 24 hours to set.

Covering Holes

You will need a small piece of flashing to cover up a hole in your gutter system. Apply the roof cement around the patch instead of along the seams.

Of course, there are risks involved when working with gutters. The only way to completely eliminate these risks is by calling a professional for all your gutter repair needs. They will have all the tools and materials needed, and you won’t have to get up on the ladder yourself.
