When choosing gutters and gutter protection systems, it’s important to understand the differences between the various products so you can make an informed decision. Today’s blog from Gutter Helmet® of Cookeville discusses the various gutter styles you can choose from.

Gutters 101: Examining Different Gutter Styles

There are two basic gutter styles: K-style gutters and half-round gutters. The shape of the gutter is determined by its cross-section.

K-Style Gutters

These gutters have flat bottoms and flat backs. They have a “K” profile that’s more apparent when viewed from the side. The front portion of K-style gutters usually takes on the shape of a curve or any decorative shape that mimics crown molding. Since they are deeper in length, K-style gutters can hold more water than half-round gutters.

These gutters are available in 5-inch or 6-inch variants. You may also purchase them in seven- or eight-inch sizes. K-style gutters are commonly installed in modern-style homes.

Half-Round Gutters

Half-round gutters are shaped like round tubes and have curled-top outer edges on both sides. This gutter style is more characteristic of classic or traditional homes. Half-round gutters are more decorative than k-shape gutters. Their shape also allows for easier debris cleaning and smoother water flow.

Half-round gutters are typically composed of copper, though they can also be made from aluminum, galvanized steel or zinc-coated metal. Note that half-round gutters are heavier than K-style gutters because the former requires more materials for the same length and size. Half-round gutters also require special rods and brackets to keep them in place, whereas K-style gutters can be fastened directly to the fascia.

You can also choose from a wide array of materials for your gutters. Common materials are aluminum, copper, steel and vinyl.
