When it comes to exterior home upgrades, every material matters, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they are. Take the screws used in your gutter installation project, for example. They only have one job–to keep your new gutters firmly in place. But if you don’t take their type and quality into account, the screws can negatively impact the longevity and performance of your new gutters. The premier gutter guard cleaning expert, Gutter Helmet Systems of Alabama, discusses why gutter screws are an important factor to consider in a gutter installation.

Galvanic Corrosion Can Happen

This is the primary reason. When the screws are not made of the right material, or subpar in quality, the potential for galvanic corrosion in gutters will increase. Galvanic corrosion refers to an electrochemical process where one metal corrodes to another when they make contact. This generally occurs in gutters when the type of metal used for the screws reacts to the metal used for the gutter material.

How Do You Prevent Galvanic Corrosion?

You just need to check the type of gutter screws used by your contractor. Make sure they’re the type that won’t lead to a reaction with the gutter material. Most contractors will either use screws that are zinc-plated or stainless steel. If the contractor is planning to use the former, have them change it. That’s because zinc-plated gutter screws never last long. Oxidation caused by sun exposure can damage their plating, while rain or moisture can cause the steel underneath to rust. Corrosion is not only unsightly, it can also make your gutters less secure. If you have to choose gutter screws, go for ones made of stainless steel. They are tougher and more resilient, allowing them to withstand most weather conditions. Stainless steel screws also ensure that your new gutters will remain firmly in place.
