In choosing the best rain gutter system for your home, it is important that you know the different types and styles of available gutters. When making your selection, consider the gutters’ shape and configuration. One of the most popular on the market today is the K-Style gutter style. Read on as Gutter Helmet® of Western North Carolina, one of the top gutter guard companies in the local area, discusses everything you need to know about it.

What’s in a Name?

The name of this gutter system does not actually refer to a shape that resembles the letter K, as various pieces of information provided by the internet often say. The truth is that this type of gutter is the 11th in the alphabetical list of the 12 most common types of rectangular gutter as named by the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association (SMACNA).

Another name for the K-style gutter is the “ogee” gutter. It comes from the fact that its design profile has a curve shaped somewhat like an S, which is known in architecture as an ogee. This can be discerned when seen from the side, with the elongated S curve included into the front face design.

K-Style Gutter Sizes and Configurations

K-style gutters are available in various sizes and configurations. Residential homes utilize gutter systems of five to six inches. Seven- to eight-inch ones are reserved for commercial properties, though it is possible for homeowners to have the seven-inch gutter installed, albeit rarely.

K-style gutters account for almost 80% of rain gutter installation today, with a variety of metals available in the market. The most popular is still aluminum, which is lightweight and resistant to corrosion. Other choices, like copper and galvalume, offer better durability and strength.

Having this style of gutters installed in your home is not enough, however. It would also be great if you invest in an efficient protection system. At Gutter Helmet of Western North Carolina, we offer high-quality gutter protection systems to make the whole system function longer.
