A Look at the History of Gutters

By April 18, 2017October 18th, 2023No Comments

Gutters play a significant role in many homes, protecting them by redirecting rainwater away from their foundations. It’s hard to imagine homes without gutters, which is just as well; they’ve been around for a very long time.

As a proud recipient of positive gutter guards reviews, Gutter Helmet® Systems of Alabama is glad to provide you with a look at the history of gutters. We also include a discussion about the exceptional features of our patented gutter protection system.

History of Gutters

Gutters have existed dating back to somewhere between 3000 BC and 1500 BC. The Harappan civilization, located in modern-day Pakistan, used water-borne toilets connected by drains covered with bricks of burnt clay. These are considered the earliest form of gutters. Between 27 BC to 14 AD, the Romans built their roads by “crowning” them at the center to redirect mud and water into gutters.

In the year 1066, the invasion of the Normans led to the redesigning of structures, such as churches and residences, to have stone roofs and parapets. Water that collected on those areas were drained into gutters that then flowed out from the mouths of gargoyle statues. Over the years, other cultures began to adapt such gutter technology, leading to their modern incarnation.

While gutters are an efficient way to keep excessive water from compromising your home’s exterior features, it’s still important to take proactive steps to keep them in top shape. A reliable way to ensure this is to install an efficient gutter protection system such as our Gutter Helmet.

Our brand of gutter guard features a ribbed surface for added tensile strength, which allows it to handle heavy rain and high winds. It also ensures rainwater clings to it as it rounds the edge of the system. Meanwhile, its nose-forward design allows water to enter a small slit while blocking out leaves, pine needles, and other debris.

Aside from this, it comes with a PermaLife™ finish that will protect it from the elements for lasting beauty and performance.  It also comes with a transferable limited warranty for your peace of mind. With these features, you no longer have to worry about cleaning your gutters ever again, which is why it has garnered many positive gutter guards reviews.

Gutter Helmet Systems of Alabama will provide you with effective gutter solutions to protect your gutter system. We serve Chelsea, Alabama, and nearby areas. Call us today at (866) 598-7525 for a FREE estimate.
