9 Tips for Organizing Your House for Sale

By March 7, 2016October 17th, 2023No Comments

You’re ready to sell your home. Your home may have many special amenities and features, from walk-in closets to granite countertops, but if it is not looking its best, potential buyers will not see past the problems. Getting your home ready to list includes deep-cleaning, removing clutter, making basic repairs, tuning up gutters and more. Here are some steps to keep in mind to help you get ready to make the sale.

  1. Store away personal items such as family portraits and artwork, so buyers can picture themselves living in the home. Keep counters clear of clutter.
  2. Move extra furniture and bulky items out of the home and into storage. You can keep furniture like a love seat and up to two armchairs, but skip large sofas. This will create a feeling of more space.
  3. Organize furniture so that there is a purpose for each room. For example, keep computers in the office and remove toys from the living room. Intentionally draw your potential buyer’s eyes to the focal point you want them to see in each room.
  4. Tidy up the basement and other areas like utility rooms or storage spaces, including exposed shelving.
  5. Clean your bathrooms thoroughly. Buyers pay close attention to bathrooms and kitchens, so they should be spotless for best results. Clear countertops and remove overly personal items.
  6. Check your gutters. Do they need to be repaired? It is essential to have gutter systems in place to protect the home and foundation from water damage.
  7. Check for and repair any cosmetic damage in your home, from holes in the wall to chipped paint. Dust all countertops, fans and light fixtures. Vacuum and shampoo carpets. If you have wood floors, you may also need to refinish them.
  8. Mow the lawn regularly and remove any weeds. Trim shrubbery and add flowers to improve the exterior of your home. If you have a deck, pressure wash it as well as your home’s exterior. Clean out the garage and any storage sheds.
  9. Add touches that welcome potential buyers, ranging from scented candles to keeping fresh flowers in the living or dining room, to adding fluffy towels in the bathroom, and fresh fruit on the kitchen counter.
