Overflowing gutters are a fairly common problem among homeowners. Here are the common issues and their corresponding causes.

Incorrectly Positioned Gutters

One possible reason rainwater is spilling out of your gutters is that they’re not correctly positioned. If the gutter’s pitch is too steep, rainwater will overflow. If the pitch is too low, rainwater will gather in one spot. To make sure rainwater flows to the downspout and drains, have a professional contractor adjust your gutter system to the correct pitch.

Gutters With Not Enough Capacity

Sometimes, it’s not the pitch that’s the problem—it’s the capacity of your gutter system. Your gutter system might not be big enough to catch all of the rainwater that’s flowing down your roof. If this is the case, have a contractor install gutters that can handle a large amount of rainfall.

Not Enough Gutters or Downspouts

Keep in mind that if there aren’t enough downspouts, it doesn’t matter how big your gutters are. Water will still overflow.

Clogged Gutters

Foliage and other debris are the usual culprits behind overflowing gutters. With the leaves blocking the downspout, rainwater accumulates in your gutters until it overflows. This is why contractors strongly recommend homeowners clean their gutters every day. The problem is a lot of homeowners just don’t have the time to clean their gutters. If you’re on a tight work schedule, installing gutter covers would be a good idea.

Gutter covers prevent leaves and other debris from entering your gutters, minimizing its maintenance needs. Keep in mind that gutter covers can only reduce not eliminate the need for gutter maintenance. That is except for Gutter Helmet®. It’s the only brand on the market that has a Never Clean Your Gutters Again® guarantee.
