Possible Reasons Why Your Gutters and Downspouts are Noisy

By May 1, 2020October 18th, 2023No Comments

Your gutters are one of your home’s first lines of defense against the elements. After all, they catch the rainwater that runs off your roof and safely redirects it away from your home, which in turn protects your property from water damage. However, there may be some instances when you hear strange noises coming from your gutters whenever they’re in use.

Here are the possible reasons why your gutters and downspouts are sometimes noisy.

Your Gutters are Clogging

Your gutters work at their best when they’re free of debris. Without it, the runoff rainwater that your roof catches can freely flow through the system until it’s away from your home. However, if your gutters are full of debris, it’s possible for it to become clogged, preventing the water from flowing peacefully throughout the system, creating a lot of noise in the process.

With that in mind, if you want to prevent this in the future, it’s highly recommended that you clean your gutters every now and then and consider installing a gutter protection system in the future to minimize the amount of debris that falls into your gutters in the future.

The Downspouts are at an Awkward Angle

For your gutters to work properly, they need to be installed at the right angle. This is because if they aren’t, the rainwater won’t slide along the edges, creating a jarring sound everytime it hits the downspouts. To rectify this issue, alter the angle of your downspouts to prevent it from creating noise. If needed, you may also have to replace the bottom section of the downspout so it’ll have a wider, smoother angle.

The Brackets or Appendages Have Loosened

Your gutters need to be tightly attached to your home in order to work properly. Unfortunately, a combination of time and weather can eventually cause it to loosen its hold on your roof. As time goes by, it’s possible for your gutters to be hanging loosely by a few screws. Once this happens, the momentum and force of the water that pours into your loose gutters can cause it to jiggle and create noise. To fix this problem, call a contractor to tighten the connections or replace any damaged parts of your gutters and downspouts if necessary.
