Patching leaking gutters is an essential home repair that can be done in a few hours’ time, and won’t take much effort. In this blog, your local Gutter Helmet® provider, Mr. Fix-It™, shares an overview of how to patch leaking gutters.

How to Patch Leaking Gutters

Before you begin, make sure that the gutters are free from leaves and debris. Hose down remaining dirt and debris after scooping most of them out. Water from the hose also simulates rainfall, which will let you spot leaks along the gutter troughs. You can use a felt-tip pen or a paint marker and get back to these leaks later.

Once the gutters are dry, prepare your tools: caulking, putty knife, sandpaper, dry nylon brush, and, optionally, a can of anti-rust primer spray. Using a steady ladder, climb to the edge of the roof and sand away rusty parts. Brush the remaining rust particles away. For leaky joints, apply an even bead of caulking. Apply spray-on primer to flat exposed areas. Allow drying completely.

Large Holes and Cracks

Large holes in the gutters will need to be cleaned first as previously described. Measure the size of the hole and cut a piece of flashing with about a 1-inch overlap on all sides. Apply spray-on primer on both sides of the hole. Once the primer is dry, take the piece of flashing, apply a coat of roof patch cement, and place the flashing facedown over the hole. Apply pressure and use a putty knife to spread excess cement over both sides of the hole.

Preventative Approach

Taking the preventative approach to gutter care is preferable. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help prevent rusted spots and damaged joints. Gutter protection systems like Gutter Helmet® keep leaves, dirt, and debris out of the gutters, which helps reduce the likelihood of rust. It also helps reduce the need for such repairs, which require climbing to the roof’s edge. Inexperienced homeowners would be placing themselves in danger by performing such tasks.
