The gutter is a vital part of your home as it diverts any runoff water from your roof away from the home itself, protecting it from moisture damage. With that in mind, it’s understandable if you want to get it repaired or replaced as soon as possible if it’s damaged. Insurance policies can be a big help here as they can help you pay for the expenses. But are damaged gutters really covered by insurance policies?

Does Insurance Cover Gutter Damage?

The short answer to this question is actually “it depends”. This is because whether or not your insurance will cover your damaged gutter is dependent on the policy that you have. If you bought an “all-risk” policy for your homeowner’s insurance, then, yes, it is covered. On the other hand, if your policy only protects you from specific kinds of perils, such as fire, lightning, vandalism, or hail, and gutter damage isn’t included, then it won’t cover the gutter damage.

Keep in mind, however, that just because a policy is “all-risk”, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its exclusions.

Exclusions

As stated before, all-risk insurance policies don’t always cover everything. One of the kinds of damage that it doesn’t cover is flood damage unless you have a federally backed flood insurance. Gutter damage due to wear and tear, and age is also another exclusion as the responsibility to maintain your gutters falls solely on your shoulders.

On the other hand, if the insurance company manages to prove that you were negligent in the gutter’s care and caused its early deterioration, the insurer may also deny covering your broken gutters and any subsequent damage caused by it.
