Galvanic corrosion is essentially rust that develops when metal components in the gutters or gutter protection system come into contact with each other. It is commonly observed around screws and supports and is most common in corrosive environments like in coastal areas or industrial places.

The Science of Galvanic Corrosion

Galvanic corrosion occurs when two different types of metal come into contact with each other while an electrolyte is present. Electrolytes are non-metal substances capable of conducting electric currents; water is a good example.

Corrosive metals are known as electropositive metals, while corrosive-resistant ones are referred to as electronegative. A galvanic scale was developed to define whether a metal is electropositive or electronegative.

When two metals come together in the presence of an electrolyte, electropositive metals will corrode. The farther away the two metals are from each other in the galvanic scale, the faster the effect and speed of the reaction will be.

Preventing Galvanic Corrosion

To keep galvanic corrosion to a minimum, here are some tips:

  • Coat electropositive metals with appropriate paint or other non-metallic coatings.

  • Separate metals with sealant, elastomeric sheets, waterproof paper, gaskets, tape or other non-absorbent, non-conductive material.

  • Limit total time that metal surfaces are left wet.
