According to a research study conducted by business research company Freedonia Group, the demand for gutter and downspout products is projected to reach $6.0 billion by the year 2022. This growth, however, is expected to slow down throughout the year because of the anticipated moderation in residential improvements and repairs.

Gutter Helmet® of Western North Carolina, your local expert on how to clean gutters with gutter guards, discusses the factors influencing the projected growth within the industry.

A Healthy Growth in Construction Activity

The Freedonia Group study presented historical demand data, covering a 10-year period between 2007 and 2017. The projected figure for 2022 is a result of strong sales gains between 2012 and 2017, which was driven by increased re-roofing activity. An improvement in the economic conditions following the 2008 recession saw heightened reroofing projects, which included gutter replacement.

That steady increase in demand was also seen in the period between 2016 and 2017, the latter of which saw the U.S. experiencing what would be one of the costliest hurricane seasons to date. Moving forward, however, the study indicated that the high replacement activity within the residential spectrum is expected to slow down.

Regional Trends Through 2022

As for the U.S. gutter and downspout market, the period between 2017 to 2022 will see certain regional trends. For one, the South will remain the largest and fastest growing region. The recent wildfires that happened in the West will also be a reason for potentially strong gutter guard sales in the region. Such products have been seen as capable of mitigating the spread of wildfires. Slower gains due to slower growth of construction activity, however, will be seen in the Northeast and Midwest.
