With fall quickly approaching and winter not far behind it, it’s time for comfy boots, cozy scarves, colorful leaves, and cooler weather. Amid all the excitement of preparing for fall, it is important not to forget to prepare our homes as well.
Here is a list of things to do before the weather hits in the coming weeks.
Check Your Heating System
Having your heating system checked once a year is a good idea, and what better time to do that than right before you actually need to use it. You should hire a professional to come out before cold weather begins to make sure your system is working properly.
Clean and Check Fireplace
Have an expert check and clean your fireplace, to be sure there are no hazards or damage. A nest at the top of your chimney could lead to an unsafe situation if you innocently light your fireplace before removing it.
Change Air Filters
You should be changing your air filters every few months already and fall is a great time to change your filter. Additionally, a clean air filter will keep your family healthier during the winter.
Fill the Gaps
Check around windows and doors for gaps, if you find any take a little time to caulk around them. If needed roll up and old towel or blanket to put at the foot of attic or basement doors to prevent heat to seep into places it’s not needed.
Turn Outdoor Faucets Off
To prevent pipes from bursting make sure that all outdoor faucets are turned off and hoses are disconnected. Remember to turn on indoor faucets to a slow drip to help prevent pipes from bursting if the temperature gets below zero during the winter.
Check and Clean Gutters
Cleaning your gutters at least once is one of the most important parts of preparing for fall and winter. You can either hire a professional or do it yourself, but you will need to clear all of the leaves and debris from your rain gutters, this way rain and melting snow can freely fall away and prevent build up.
While you are up there you should scan the roof for any damaged shingles and make sure you don’t have any holes.
