Blog Gutter Leaf Guard, the Permanent Solution to Clogged Downspouts July 1, 2014July 1, 2014Chelsea WelshBlog, Gutter Protection, Uncategorized Are you one of those conscientious homeowners who cleans out your gutters in the spring and fall, hoping to avoid the perils of clogged gutters? If so, you are likely also aware of the importance of properly sloped gutters, and are diligent about making sure the gutters are not rusting or leaking. So when the heavy rains start, your carefully maintained rain gutter system directs water that runs down your roof smoothly into the gutters … and stops at the clogged downspouts. Clean gutters, clogged downspouts: it’s a classic dilemma for homeowners who clear all visible debris from their gutter troughs, yet overlook the downspouts. Clear downspouts are an essential component to carry water channeled through the gutters down and safely away from the foundation of your home, subsequently preventing mold, mildew, interior flooding and foundation problems. Here’s more about how downspouts and gutters work together to protect your home. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbrqPWDVWpY If you notice water pouring over the edges of your gutters and not flowing out through your downspouts, it is likely that they are clogged with leaves and twigs – or even the occasional bird’s nest or tennis ball. Follow these steps to clear a clogged downspout. If a clogged downspout is connected to an underground drain, first remove the bottom of the downspout from the drain to prevent the clog from moving to the drain pipe. Place a garden hose into the downspout. Turn up the water pressure as high as it will go to check for downspout flow. If water backs up out of the downspout, a clog is present. Firmly tap on the side of the downspout to dislodge the clog. If the clog does not clear, remove the hose and manually clear the downspout using a plumbing snake. Insert the plumbing snake from the top of the downspout until it reaches the clog. If these steps fail, disassemble the downspout at the bends (where clogs usually form) by removing the retaining screws. Clear the clog, reassemble and rinse out the entire rain gutter system to check for proper flow.
