A Gutter Protection System to help reduce the formation of Ice Dams
Regardless of the size of your home or the neighborhood in which you live, ice dams are a threat if they are not prevented and controlled efficiently. Improperly insulated attics can cause snow to melt and the end result is an ice dam that can create leaks in your home and significantly damage the structure of your roof.
What is an Ice Dam?
Ice dams are created when the air inside the attic is significantly warmer than the temperature outside. When snow falls and hits the roof, the warmer temperature causes the snow to melt. As the water runs off the roof and reaches its edge, it refreezes as temperatures become colder. This frozen water creates a dam that backs up more melted water. The water trapped behind the dam may eventually be absorbed by the shingles on the roof.
How to reduce Ice Dam formation
The basic concept behind reducing ice dams is to keep the exterior of the roof from getting too warm. It should never reach more than 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice dams can be prevented with proper attic insulation and ventilation, both of which help keep the roof colder and create a temperature that is less conducive to the creation of ice dams.
However, as many homeowners have realized, there are cases when attic insulation and ventilation aren’t enough to completely eliminate ice dams. In such cases, Gutter Helmet® and Helmet Heat® are the solution you need in helping to reduce ice dams.
- Gutter Helmet®.Our gutter protection system helps reduce ice dams by ensuring that your gutters remain clear of obstructions through the worst kinds of weather. So as water melts and rolls down the roof, your gutters will be able to effectively move the snowmelt to the ground and away from the home rather than allowing it to pool and refreeze at the corners of the roof.
- Helmet Heat®. Our energy-efficient, self-regulating gutter heating system melts snow and ice before they even get a chance to build up around your eaves. The snowmelt then flows harmlessly down your gutters and downspouts. Helmet Heat® cables are installed under your Gutter Helmet® to create an effective and aesthetically pleasing ice dam-busting system.
The Gutter Helmet® and Helmet Heat® tandem is your number one ally in the battle against reducing ice dams. The best part: you can enjoy year-round peace of mind without ever having to get on a ladder!
