Smart Steps to Take to Weatherize Your Home for Winter

By November 16, 2015October 17th, 2023No Comments

With cold weather just around the corner, it’s time to prepare by winterizing your home. Although natural gas prices remain relatively low, no one wants to spend more than they need to on utilities. Keep as much money in your pocket as possible and avoid major repairs by following these tips.

  • Have a heating professional perform a routine check-up of your furnace. They can vacuum vents, replace furnace filters and tune up the system so it runs more efficiently and uses less energy when cold weather sets in.
  • Your attic may be the single biggest source of heat loss within your home. A professional roofer can inspect the attic to be sure there is an adequate amount of insulation and ventilation. As a bonus, proper insulation and ventilation will stop the formation of ice dams over the winter. Ice damming can be very troublesome because, if not dealt with, it can allow water to back up behind the ice along the eaves and lead to serious roof leaks.
  • Check the roof for damaged shingles and clean out the house gutters and downspouts so clogs do not form. To prevent future accumulation of leaves and debris, install innovative gutter shields from Gutter Helmet®. With Gutter Helmet, there will be no more climbing ladders or hiring someone to clean your gutters.
  • If you have issues with ice build-up on your roof in winter, consider installing Helmet Heat®, a self-regulating gutter heating cable. Helmet Heat fits inside Gutter Helmet and gently warms it, allowing water to flow easily through gutters and downspouts all winter long.
  • Use caulk and weatherstripping to fill gaps and minimize air infiltration around windows and doors. Air leaks here and in other areas can sap home efficiency by up to 30% annually, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
  • Exposed pipes entering your home from the exterior can freeze in extremely cold weather and may burst. Wrap exposed pipes in insulation to keep them functioning properly.
