As we look forward to the start of spring, there are many steps you can take to prepare your home for warmer weather. Gutter Helmet®, America’s #1 brand of gutter protection, offers these helpful tips to get you started.

Check for Roof Damage

A roof can get damaged either from inclement weather conditions or normal wear and tear. It is essential that you have a professional check for roof damage annually to address any immediate issues and prevent larger ones from developing. Summer sun can be hard on roof shingles. Your roofer should also pay attention to the condition of the roof around chimney, skylights and plumbing vents as applicable.

Clean Out Gutters & Downspouts

It is much easier to clean out gutters when the weather is nice outside! This task is very important to keep debris out of your gutters and downspouts and enable the water to flow smoothly. You will want to check for any loose or leaky gutters. When your gutters do not drain properly, water backs up and can eventually find its way into your basement or crawl space. Check that your downspouts are draining away from the foundation. Downspouts need to be cleaned out and free of any debris or other materials that may have accumulated over the winter.

This is also a great time to invest in effective gutter guard systems. A rain gutter guard keeps leaves, branches, nests, pollen, debris and other matter out of your gutters, while ensuring that water flows off the roof, down into the gutters and safely to the ground without causing any water damage to the exterior or foundation of your home. Gutter Helmet offers powerful protection and easy maintenance through well-designed gutter guard systems.

Trim Existing Trees, Bushes & Foliage

You may have dead branches lying in your yard after the winter has passed. Spring is a good time to clean up your yard. This includes trimming bushes and trees. Make sure that utility wires are not covered by foliage.

Check for Low Areas in the Yard

Sometimes sections of soil can become compacted over the winter. Rains in the springtime may lead to flooding, which in turn can damage a foundation. Therefore, it is essential that you fill these areas with enough soil to create a level surface and prevent flooding and moisture development.

Repair Driveways & Walkways

Spring is an excellent time to inspect driveways and walkways and repair cracks, broken spots and uneven areas. Make sure you have level surfaces for walking and driving. You may also need to trim and remove any foliage growing in these areas.
