No Green Thumb? You Can Still Reap the Benefits of an Herb Garden

By July 24, 2015October 17th, 2023No Comments

An herb garden, situated near the kitchen for quick access, is one of the most useful gardens you can grow. Fresh herbs require only minimal maintenance and can grow in most soil types. An herb garden may be grown in a small plot, in pots on a deck or patio, or even in a window box in the kitchen. Start with a few of these favorite herbs and reap the rewards of fantastic flavor in your cooking!

Basil. The fragrant leaves of basil can be added raw to salads, sandwiches and sauces. Basil should be planted in fertile soil in a location that receives up to eight hours of full sun each day. Basil cannot tolerate frost, so be careful to sow seeds after all frost danger has passed, then dig up and bring in before the first fall frost.

Rosemary. Rosemary leaves complement many foods, especially baked goods and roasted meat and vegetables. Growing from seeds is more difficult than other herbs, so consider buying rosemary plants from your local nursery. This perennial grows best in well-drained soil and prefers sunshine, but will tolerate some shade.

Mint. Mint adds wonderful flavor to sauces and can easily be dried for storage. It is a hardy perennial that is easiest to grow from cuttings. The root system of the mint plant is notoriously invasive in the garden, so it is best to grow it in containers. It prefers rich, moist soil.

Parsley. Parsley is a popular herb grown as an annual. It can be used as a garnish or for flavoring. The seeds take three to four weeks to germinate, so start them indoors and transplant into containers or rich, well-drained soil.

Chives. Chives, the smallest member of the onion family, is a perennial plant whose stalks add great flavor to savory dishes. The edible flowers can be added to salads. Bulbs are best planted in bunches of around five in well-drained soil or containers.
