7 Ways to Avoid Basement Flooding During the Spring Thaw

By April 7, 2016October 17th, 2023No Comments

During the spring, basements often become flooded as snow melts and spring showers overwhelm a gutter system. Having waterlogged clothing items, ruined furniture and a messy floor is not something any homeowner wants to experience, so taking steps to prevent flooding in your basement is essential. Here are some important precautions to avoid this scenario.

  1. Repair foundation cracks. Does your foundation have cracks that can lead to flooding and other problems? Seal small cracks with caulk. For bigger repairs, call a professional foundation service company.
  2. Regrade the yard. Check your yard. Is water running back toward your home’s foundation after it leaves the downspouts? Fill in any holes and low areas so that your yard slopes away from your foundation. You may need to install a French drain if you are unable to sufficiently regrade the yard.
  3. Extend downspouts. Where are your downspouts draining? They should be ending several feet away from your foundation. Reposition downspouts and add extensions if needed to make sure water is deposited safely away from your home.
  4. Clean and repair gutters. If gutters are clogged or damaged in any way, they can easily contribute to basement flooding. Gutter Helmet® gutter covers ensure the smooth flow of water to the ground and away from the foundation and sides of the home.
  5. Fix leaky pipes. Check your pipes and exterior spigots for leaks. If they are cracked, broken or loose, they will allow water to flood into your basement. Sometimes pipes don’t work because they are clogged. Check for blockage and remove any debris and other matter.
  6. Add a backwater valve. It can help to have a backwater valve to prevent water from backing up through your pipes and into your basement. This valve will separate your home from the sewer when water backs up.
  7. Check septic tanks. You may have debris, trash and grease piling up in your septic system. Have the tank inspected, cleaned out or replaced to prevent further problems.

By following a few proactive tips, you can prevent a lot of hassles and costly repairs. To find out more about how Gutter Helmet has helped countless homeowners around the country protect their homes, call us today at (800) 824-3772.
